Parvin Shakir - A legend

“We ought to have met, in another time, in pursuit of attainable dreams, below a different sky,
Upon a different earth, we ought to have met then, there.”
Parveen Shakir

Today marks birth anniversary of a great poetess of Pakistan. Even after sixteen years of her death, her poetical works remain unmatched. As a prolific poet, she started writing at a very young age. The first volume of her poetry “Khushbu” got great critical acclamation in 1970s. The other volumes of her poetry, “Sad-e-Barg”, “Inkaar”, “Khud Kilami” and “Kaif-e Aaaina” were also equally popular. Besides her poetical works, “Gosha-e-chashm” (compilation of her newspaper columns) was also acclaimed. The work “Mah-e-tamam” forms a compilation of her all poetical works.

Her poetry primarily draws deep influences from Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi. She used to call him “Ammujan” and the first collection “Khushbu” is dedicated to him. Also, the opening poem titled “Sar-e-Shaakh-e-gul” of “Khushbu” is also written on him. Parveen is also the first poetess to use English titles for Urdu poems. Her poems “Ecstasy”, “Prism”, “Catharsis”, and “Duty” have English titles.

She was known as poet of Dreams, colors and Fragrances.

Her work was often based on romanticism, exploring the concepts of love, beauty and their contradictions, and heavily integrated the use of metaphors, similes and personifications.

Parveen had her own style and diction that remains matchless with any other poet of Pakistan. Ghazal and freestyle are the only two forms of poetry that she used. Her poetical works mainly reflect the themes of love, gender discrimination, social injustice, feminism, social stigmas and romanticism. Apart from being a romanticist, her works reflect the tranquil concepts of love, beauty and contradiction, along with usage of metaphors and embodiments. She was also the first poet to use a term “Larki” in her works.

“Gaye janam ki sada” from her first work “Khushbu”, are a few lines……..
“Woh ek larki………
Ke jis se shayad mein ek pal bhi nahi mili hun………
Mein uskey chehre ko janti hun k uska chehra…………..

There is another poem “Muqaddar” where she writes……..

“Mein wo larki hoon jis ko pehli raat……..
Koi ghoonghat utha key yeh kehdey………”

This unique style of using feminine language is seen rare in the world of a male-dominated Urdu poetry, where a girl is openly talking about something she feels or something that touches her. This gives the most elegant female touch to her work. After Fahmida Riaz, Parveen was obviously the next Urdu poetess to bring out and sketch an influential feminine voice that was both exigent and engaging to a male dominated society. This was the area where she created her own forte. As compared to her ghazals, her freestyle work is more about social matters and taboos like gender inequality, gender unfairness, nationalism, sham, prostitution, human psyche and current affairs.

She is one of those Urdu poets whose works have impressed everyone through her thematic and pragmatic poetry. Her works simply add a new facet to the customary theme of love by presenting it in a simpler yet more transparent style and by using a multiplicity of words and metaphors to express different thoughts with varying intensities. Her works truly define the susceptibility of several generations and reflect an in-separation of poetry and tragedy. The very deep romanticism that radiantly runs in her works shows a subterranean and colossal refinement with an amalgamated melody.

Her poetry has also been sung and composed by many singers and musicians. Tassawar Khanum beautifully sang her poem “Tooti he meri neend magar…..”. Famous band Vital Signs sang her poem “Chehra” in different versions. Tina Sani sang her “Sundar Komal Sapno ki..” Mehdi Hasan sang “Koo ba koo phel gai” from collection “Khushbu” in 1982. Habib Wali sang “Gori karat Singhaar” from her collection “Khushbu”, later which was performed by Jawad Ahmed as well.
Her first book “Khushbu” won Pakistan's Adamjee Award and she was later awarded Pride of Performance. She left us on 26th of December 1994 in a car accident.

If he be scent, let him not touch me
and pass, until he be part of my existence.
The flower half-opened its lips,
I shall cleanse his lashes with my shawl
So the dust of this day's journey,
May not enter tomorrow's!

Quotes by Sadaf Fayyaz

Happiness lies within our selves

Happiness lies within our selves

It is often said that people with the prettiest smiles in this world have the saddest hearts. Before we try to make others happy, we must be happy ourselves. Happiness at times doesn’t come from the surroundings but by being happy over little things in life. In order to stay happy and satisfied, get yourself surrounded with positive people and stay away from the negative ones. Also, adopting an optimistic approach towards life leads to happiness. Happiness may be conditional or situational at times. Whenever we watch a funny movie or read a funny message, we feel happy.
Happiness is a matter of inner contentment and is linked with your self esteem. At times listening to sad songs or watching tragedy films makes us sad. Try to flush out sadness by engaging into a set of activities that make you happy. If you have decided to stay unhappy and pessimistic, no one can make you happy. Adopting a healthy life style and sticking to a busy work routine also keeps us happy. So happiness is a choice and it is your choice only. If you have decided to stay happy, no one can stop you from smiling. Smile or laughter is an expression of happiness.

World Tolerance Day

Happy World Tolerance Day...

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. [17;23]

BEING A DUTIFUL CHILD
A man came to the Prophet and said: “I have come to pledge to you my loyalty and to emigrate. I have left my parents in tears. The Prophet said to him: “Go back to them and make them smile as you have made them cry.”
(Related by Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others).
In other words, the Prophet gave a very clear indication to the man that if his parents would be so miserable as to cry because he was leaving them in order to emigrate, then he was better off staying with them in order to make them happy. The Prophet did not wish that sadness should be felt by parents as a result of a duty Islam required of its followers.
Consider this Hadith reported by Ibn Abbas: “For any Muslim who has two Muslim parents and who goes to them every morning obeying their requests, Allah opens two doors to heaven. If he has one parent Allah opens one door to heaven for him. If he displeases either of them, Allah will not be pleased with him until that parent of his is pleased with him. Someone asked: Even when they are unjust to him? He answered: Even if they are unjust.”
Abu Hurairah reported that a person came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and asked: “Who among people is the most deserving of my fine treatment?” The prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Your Mother.” He asked again: “Who next?” The prophet replied: “Your Mother.” He asked again: “Who next?” The prophet said again, “Your Mother.” He again asked, “Then who?” The prophet said: “Your Father.”
“It's an universal law-- intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education. An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”
― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

“In the practice of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher.”
― Dalai Lama XIV
The highest result of education is tolerance.
Helen Keller
What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature.
Voltaire
Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions.
Gilbert K. Chesterton
Acceptance and tolerance and forgiveness, those are life-altering lessons.
Jessica Lange
Islam teaches tolerance, not hatred; universal brotherhood, not enmity; peace, and not violence.
Pervez Musharraf

Tolerance is an essential requirement for societies to co-exist in peace and harmony, away from cultural, religious or political issues.

Quotes of Hazrat Imam Hasan (RA)

World Diabetes Day...

November 14 marks World Diabetes Day..

Wasim Akram-The former Pakistani bowler also known as ‘the King of Swing” was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 30 and was at the peak of his career.

Fawad Khan is a diabetic patient from the age of 17. Zeba Bakhtiar , Tariq Aziz and Amjab Islam Amjad also come in this.

Wasim Akram: The former Pakistani bowler also known as ‘the King of Swing” was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 30 and was at the peak of his career. Akram apparently could not believe that he could be a diabetic as he thought that only people over the age of 50 and leading a sedentary lifestyle could get it. Eventually, he learnt to follow a strict diet and exercise regimen that was tailor made for him along with daily insulin doses. To his credit he has about 250 wickets which he took after being diagnosed as a diabetic!

Kamal Hassan: Diabetes has not dampened the spirits of this versatile actor and father of actress Shruti Hassan. He tries to balance a hectic schedule and his Type 1 diabetes and even takes out time to encourage other diabetics to take charge of their lives.

Gaurav Kapur: The Channel V VJ, host of Big Switch 2 and actor was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the tender age of 22. Gaurav now practices yoga and jogs to keep fit, follows a strict diet and avoids alcohol to keep his sugars under control.

Elvis Presley: The King of ‘Rock and Roll’never publically admitted the fact that he was a diabetic and went on leading a high profile life.

Halle Berry: The Oscar winning Hollywood actress was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 23 when she collapsed on the sets of a TV show. The actress then went on to win numerous awards and even an Oscar in 2001. In 2007, she gave birth to a baby girl. “Diabetes turned out to be a gift," she says. "It gave me strength and toughness because I had to face reality, no matter how uncomfortable or painful it was."

Nick Jonas: Teen heartthrob and singer of the boy band ‘The Jonas Brothers’ was diagnosed with diabetes at age 16. Diet, exercise and an insulin pump that delivers insulin throughout the day is what lets Nick lead as normal a life as possible.

Randy Jackson: The American Idol judge, singer and Grammy Award winning producer was obese, had a family history of diabetes and is an African-American(the 3 major risk factors for diabetes) when he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Randy has since then, managed to shed around 45kgs (100lbs)with regular exercise and diet.

Salma Hayek: The actress cum producer was diagnosed with gestational diabetes when she was 25 weeks pregnant with her first child. Though this type of diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy, these people have a high risk of developing diabetes later on in life.

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor fights diabetes with insulin and diet plan. Not many persons are understood that I’m struggling with teen diabetes. Diet regime and insulin has kept me on the toes in all these yrs,” tells Sonam Kapoor.

What is pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. It has no apparent symptoms.

If I have pre-diabetes, is it a cause for concern?

American Diabetes Association says people with pre-diabetes have a 1.5-fold risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people with normal blood glucose. People with diabetes have a 2-4-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

If I have pre-diabetes, is it inevitable that I will get diabetes?

No, there is hope. Experts say that diet, exercise and behaviour modification can be used to avoid developing diabetes. Also, pre-diabetes can be prevented from developing into full-blown diabetes, if only you address it. However, without adequate attention, pre-diabetes increases the risk of diabetes greatly.

The Indian Journal of Medical Research says the number of people with diabetes in India is currently around 40.9 million. This is expected to rise to 69.9 million by 2025 unless urgent preventive steps are taken. Experts also say that we have a propensity to certain ethnic factors, which makes us [Asian-Indians] more prone to diabetes.

Why are high blood sugar levels bad?

Excessive glucose in the blood stream damages the blood vessels. First, the capillaries get affected, because they are the smallest blood vessels.

If blood vessels in the eye get damaged, it can lead to blindness [retinopathy]
If blood vessels in the kidney get damaged, it can lead to kidney failure [nephropathy]
Nerve damage can cause numbness/pain in areas away from the heart, e.g., foot [diabetic foot].

Am I at risk for Diabetes?

Yes, if:

You are often thirsty
You go to the bathroom frequently to pass urine
You lose weight without knowing why
You do not have enough energy
You can’t see well [blurred vision]
You get more infections than usual
You have cuts and bruises that heal slowly
You feel tingling or numbness in your hands or feet.
There are two main forms of diabetes.

Type-1 diabetes [previously called Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus {IDDM}], is a condition where patients do not produce their own insulin. Insulin is required for the uptake and processing of sugar by the body’s cells. Type-1 diabetes is said to strike children and young adults. Occasionally, it may present for the first time in the middle aged, or the elderly. However, there is more to it than what meets the eye.
In Type-2 diabetes [Non-insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus {NIDDM}], the cells in the body become resistant to the action of insulin. Also, the pancreas produces too little insulin as it gets exhausted due to continuous demand. Type-2 diabetes generally develops in adults at age 40, or older. Called ‘adult-onset’ diabetes, researchers now suggest that more and more people are developing the Type-2 form of the disease at a much younger age [even teenagers!]. This type is known to be closely associated with obesity, increased stress, advancing age, inactivity, and genetic tendency.

Managing diabetes

control diabetesHealthy eating is a must. Eat 5-6 small meals spread over the day so that your blood glucose levels do not swing from one extreme to the other. Eat also more of highly complex carbohydrates [cereals] and high-fibre [vegetables], but cut down on refined sugars and fat intake. 1-2 fruit helpings are permissible in well-controlled diabetics. Alcohol should be best avoided, or taken occasionally, in small quantities.

Exercise, especially walking, is good for you
Medications, pills and/or insulin injections, are part of your treatment plan. Take them regularly, on your doctor’s advice
Tobacco, in any form, including smoking, is strictly not allowed for diabetics
Skin and foot care are extremely important. A cut or a bruise can lead to delayed healing, and can cause dangerous infections, or complications. So, take good care of your feet
Blood sugar monitoring and control are a must
A regular visit to your family doctor is also a must to detect early damage to the eyes, nerves, blood vessels, or teeth
Carry an identity card that you are diabetic at all times.

Say No to Kite Flying

My Diary November 13th..
