The title may sound strange and wierd to some of you. ahh.. What does it mean? Am I one air? The answer is partially yes and partially no. After I started working as a producer on a Radio station, the RJs whose shows I am assigned to produce are on air. Its a pleasure for me. Morning drive time and Ladies hour special slots are assigned to me. The real segmentation is simply fantastic. Oh my.....What about the kind of music mode that I am supposed to let my RJ play? Advance lists of songs I never supported. The reason being it may start raining and I may love to add some rain songs in the show..Does that make some sense? Off course it does. The RJ may have a similar romantic mood that day and would love to play rain songs in his/her show. This has happened many times. I say no to advanced playlisting. There is a reason to justify it too. Such a short and precise blog, just to stay in touch with you all.. and ensure you guys that I am still writing. Love you all.

“Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.” Beauty is something undefined, comparative, invisible at times and could only be felt by heart. Though, different people have different perceptions for beauty and elegance, yet everyone is there to praise it. The standards and measures of attractiveness may vary a little across different cultures, but can’t be too much deviated. The standards of beauty are always embryonic and emerging as based on what a culture and society holds precious. While talking to ‘Vivo’, different celebrities shared their perception and ideas on beauty of women. They also suggested some tips for staying beautiful:

“Some women are born beautiful while some achieve beauty and still others are on good terms with society editors. I read this quote some years ago and it amused me so much. Beauty to me is what touches me, a kind of sparkle in the eye, a naughty smile and a feel good vibe. What is lovely never dies. It passes on into a cool breeze, tingly goose bumps, stardust and moonlit starry nights. It is a feeling, soul connection seen through the naked eye yet felt deep within. It is Quirky, warm, sensual and intellectually stimulating. I am a real natural products buff. A simple effective skin routine for normal to dry skin is cleansing with rose water morning and night. Lights, Camera and Action..What an Anchor Goes Through

I thought working in TV would be glamorous, fun and exciting and off course it was. But it was also cut-throat. Moving to television from print I was eager to prove mettle in the big bad world of lights cameras and action. And I did. Everyone dreams about TV world and a glamour that is associated with it. But, the colorful and glamorous world may turn into something very hideous some time. Proving yourself isn’t enough there. There are so many things that new anchors have to go through. But this isn’t the biggest problem; the trouble is that the people you expect to support you are ruthlessly competitive.

Narcissist attitude of Old Anchors:

The first experience of hosting a live TV show was truly awesome for me. I and my co- host were assigned to host live TV show every week. OMG: the first show had three female hosts and a male celebrity. The former host kept insulting us and telling us again and again that we were new to the show and channel. “I welcome both of you to the channel and show”, she mostly talked and showed and “I” attitude. She did most of the talking and displayed a self-centred attitude throughout the show. And guess what happened? She was asked to quit the show after that by the management.

Supporting Old Anchors:

Off course, there are some who help you and are quite supporting towards you. They guide you on every step and their critique is even constructive. I would say they are the biggest supporters.

The beginning is always Exciting:

Anyways, after that we both were assigned to host the same show with our range of guests that we could possibly invite. The show and things did very well in the beginning and we kept getting great feedback from everyone. We had great time together, off-air as friends and on-air as co- hosts. Things worked very well for two months. In the mean time, I created a fan page of the show and got a great response from fans. Plus I also kept uploading videos on you tube. The viewership increased from 1900 to 10,000 in two months.

When Things Change Suddenly:

I was unable to understand how and when things started getting wrong. I saw and heard some people saying to my co host that show should have only one host. She took their words seriously. Was that so? We started having minor clashes over many things. Inviting guests was not the only issue. I remember once when I started hosting the youth show, I had written a post regarding cheap hosting quality of morning shows. The show quality was just becoming like the ones I had written against. Co-hosting a live show becomes harder when guests are invited and especially they wish to talk about their own achievements and work. Sorry…who was interested in listening to a typical small talk that could hardly serve any purpose of the show?

In the mean time, she appeared as a guest on some show. I could simply feel a lot of change in her attitude. She showed a very strange kind of behavior. “From now onwards, I will invite my own guests,” she told me icily. I tried to convince her that for one week she could invite her own guests and for one week, I could invite my own. But she refused the offer. She did that for two weeks. The last show that I did, she told me who the guests were. When I tried to contact them, they didn’t give me their contact numbers. I could not make a successful show like that. I needed full coordination with the guests that she wasn’t allowing me. I was her co host, not her follower. She kept showing an “I” attitude during the whole live show. The last example I would use as of her undermining me was when she used personalized calls during the show. I knew most of her friends who used to act as live callers and used to talk to her during the show, specially addressing her. Where was I? It was typical way to bring my profile down and undermining me during the show before the channel people.

When you are blamed for Mistakes that Others Make:

This has even happened many times. I remember a live caller called during a show and made a highly personalized comment in the live show to a colleague of mine. We were best buddies and the caller talked something very wrong about that. The colleague was hell annoyed over that and thought that I was the one to make that call. Clarifying myself was very hard for me as anything could happen during a live show.

When payments are delayed:

Working for a channel as a freelance anchor is not a joke. They don’t pay you on time. At times, most of the money is spent out of your pocket, and you hardly break even. Those who are on salary have an advantage over us. Delaying payments is an old issue that I have already discussed. I even did a show on delay in payments which was appreciated much. But even we are a victim of delayed payments. After all, it’s the world of lights, camera and action.And success comes at a cost.

We started having minor clashes over many things. Inviting guests was not the only issue. I had a friend at the channel that had a great taste for music and happens to be a very refined singer himself too. We became good friends and my co host started taunting me badly over that friendship. Though, I never criticized her for anything. I wasn’t expecting her to be that personal with me. She kept becoming bitterer with time. I had only two best freinds there. I am sad to have lost both of them. But, things couldn't move furthur like that.

In the mean time, she appeared as a guest on some show. I could simply feel a lot of change in her attitude. She showed a very strange kind of behavior. “From now onwards, I will invite my own guests,” she told me icily. I tried to convince her that for one week she could invite her own guests and for one week, I could invite my own. But she refused the offer. She did that for two weeks. The last show that I did, she told me who the guests were. When I tried to contact them, they didn’t give me their contact numbers. I could not make a successful show like that. I needed full coordination with the guests that she wasn’t allowing me. She was treating me like her “chamchi”. Excuse me! I was her co host, not her follower. She kept showing an “I” attitude during the whole live show. When one has a co host, he or she must stick to a “We” attitude. We are representing youth not our personal shadows. I could not take it anymore on my nerves. Her narcissism didn’t only hit me, but the new producer too. He was in a state of shock and depression for almost a week. I later apologized to him. But he is still not out of the mental shock. After all, it was a game of high level of narcissism that hit so many people mentally. The big question mark is still there. What makes you a narcissist?

I first met Shahana at ‘Kuch Khaas’. She appeared cheerful, vibrant and full of life. She is an actor, writer, model, stage performer, RJ and Director Programs at ‘Kuch Khaas’. She has been a part of Islamabad theater and has acted in some plays like ‘The Suicide’, ‘The Producers’ ‘Come Again’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Some Like It Hot’, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’,

Here’s the irony. As much as this is something I could write a thesis on, I’m really not that bothered.

How would people or let’s say really beautiful girls who also become more famous and rich along the way, ever know whether someone wants to be friends with them for ‘who they are’ and NOT ‘what they are’ (high profile public figures). Facing the same dilemma in terms of love?

I’m black and white about all my relationships. As long as you avoid the grey, you’re fine. Most people seek out the grey in hopes of finding something clandestine and exciting. It’s pointless at the end of the day.

In your view, what are the disadvantages of fame besides having little privacy and loneliness after having reached the top?

I wouldn’t consider myself famous just yet. I know people, they know me. For those who don’t know me but want to, they know all they need to know and I’m perfectly adept at keeping that relationship happy and complication-free. Fans have this ‘beyond imagination’ idea of you, it’s highly unrealistic. But then again, I’d do the same over someone I idolize.

Name a few of your favorite seasons/sitcoms, name your favorite characters in them and reasons for liking them?

Oh so many. They are Friends, Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, Glee, The Big Bang Theory & Modern Family. This will go on. It’s mostly the ensemble. They just make me happy in ways that actual situations don’t. But then again, our lives could easily become sitcoms. Ever imagine some light background music to a family’s fight? Try it.

My message to the readers:

Go out, roll down a hill, swing. sing and breathe. We’re really just 6-year olds stuck in big bodies. Don’t be fooled by your height, everything still is just as wonderful as the first time you saw it. Do not let anyone tell you it can’t happen.

Three things that I hate about music channels: Oh God, I wrote a whole article on this. I guess to summarize it would be: They promote anti-intellectualism, they rarely promote new bands and they have killed any sort of ambition to make quality programming.

Three things that I dislike about morning shows: The lack of genuine interest shown by the hosts, the interview techniques where the hosts talks more than the guests, the same old tired format being peddled across all the channels.

Favorite Dress: I like dressing up, so I'm a fan of wearing suits and ties, the whole deal.

Favorite place to hang out: The beach, I don't ever want to be in a city that doesn't have one.

Favorite Movie: There are so many, but it’s probably a tie between ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Almost Famous’.

Favorite Actors: Ed Norton & Christian Bale.

Characteristics that attract me as person: I love people who can laugh at themselves and really appreciate a good teasing. Being smart is also attractive. I'm a talker so the most attractive thing for me is someone who I can have a great conversation with.

My Craziest Fan: Luckily don't have any really crazy fans, occasionally get a couple of stalkers, both male and female online but then again, who doesn't?

Experience with Coke Studio: Incredible, overwhelming and hard to describe in a few words. But I think for us it made us feel like we'd finally done something worthwhile in the music industry and all our hard work finally paid off and got us the mass acceptance we'd been craving.

Success to me is: Finding one person out there who's listening to my song and smiling.

Question I hate: Ugh...every question about the name “Aunty Disco Project”. It’s been 4 years. Starting an interview with that question is just lazy.

It Glitters But It's Not Gold

“Have you written my story”, he asked me.

“Not yet man, let me come over my writer’s block.” I replied.

I hate my writer’s block. Whenever I try to write on some serious issue, it always comes in my way. What to do with it? After a month, I am writing something. How shall I start this story and where to start this story from? I have already written the stories of model victims that experience and go through lot of verbal and physical abuse while trying to pursue their career seriously. I never discussed their stories in deep detail. The first thing that I needed was a deep level of trust that the abused victims needed to develop with me. After that only, I could pick up my pen and write about them. The worst part of the harassment is that many victims don’t even know properly if they are being harassed. Most of the victims are not even aware of exactly what sexual harassment is. It includes all the unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. This has been defined to mean any unwanted behavior, action, words by a member of one sex that makes a member of the opposite sex feel uncomfortable, may be sexual harassment or abuse. Stories like this are all too common in the modeling industry, though unlike anorexia or body-image issues, they're barely exposed. It's one of the most enigmatic businesses in the world. Ironically speaking, it turns out to be one of the most pervasive businesses too. It comprises a place where drug use, physical and sexual abuse, and world-class manipulation and exploitation of the both the genders is ubiquitous.

Are Only Females Abused and Cheated By Males?

For years we have been holding a myth regarding media and modeling world that women are the most innocent preys to several media predators. Is that true? After listening to some of the stories, I had to change my mind on this myth. Females even prepare traps for harassing male models too. A very close friend of mine, who happens to be a musician and a host too, shared some of his stories with me. This was the time when he used to live in F-10 place. He went through this entire nuisance in the start for his modeling career.

One such a homo culprit developed a crush on him. The guy said no to him. The culprit kept asking him again and again. He introduced a female model to her. She befriended him and they came closer. One day, the female model and homo made this boy drunk and she started expressing herself to him. She asked him to cover his eyes with a handkerchief. Half lost in senses, when he opened his eyes, he was highly startled. What he ultimately found when he opened his eyes; he didn’t find any girl in the room. Instead of a girl, he found the male homo culprit abusing/harassing him. He started shouting and left that place ultimately. Now this was a kind of harassment that accompanied a lot of cheating and ditching behavior as well. The female took an equal part in harassing the guy indirectly. There are countless stories like these. Most of these go unreported. The most difficult thing for writing this story came when I felt the level of a ruined self-worth, self-esteem and embarrassment that the boy felt while sharing his bitter experiences with me. The myth regarding female’s innocence simply vanishes away here. This friend of mine bid adieu to modeling just because of this issue and now is sticking to music and hosting nowadays.

I received an email from a person after my write up on the fashion world. It goes like this:

“Hello Ms Sadaf,

As you've mentioned today, Pakistan fashion industry is full of corruption and vulgarity.
I'm living in UAE and passionately interested to do some fashion show OR in some Urdu serial drama. First, I have no source to contact any TV channel OR Fashion director, secondly if I will find some source what is the use to perform through Pakistani channel if we are not qualified enough?
Would appreciate your comment on this and if know any company who praise quality work, please do let me know their contact detail and will meet with them.”

I keep on receiving so many mails like these. I do have lot of links and contacts but whom to trust and whom to recommend to? You can’t trust everyone in the brutal and selfish world of media. There is one more incident where I recommended a female friend of mine to a musician friend of mine.

Where Females are Treated as Products:

Unfortunately, we live in society where females are treated as products and show pieces. The lady I am talking about is also a very close friend of mine. A guitarist from a renowned band of Pakistan asked me to recommend him some female faces for his new video. The lady I recommended him was an event manager and model promoter. I introduced them to each other. After some time, the lady started complaining to me about his unethical behavior. He often used to annoy her shoddily and verbally. There wasn’t any physical kind of harassment but only some verbal and minor kind that was found. She ended up blocking him in the end. The lady brought her complaint to me, and asked me to write about it.

So the ugly face of media is not discriminatory towards females only. Both the genders keep harassing and exploiting each other for their desires, cravings and lust. Even if we form many laws, the harassment would never eradicate until and unless these acting forces go away. Plus the kind of guilt and embarrassment that comes on the victims is vague at times. People who are doing all these things hold more powerful names and positions in the industry as compared to the models that are considered throwaways. Models would never complain and culprits would never be scared. Lust is always there. So this would continue.

Remembering Parveen Shakir on Her Sixteenth Death Anniversary

Today marks the sixteenth death anniversary of a great poetess of Pakistan. Even after sixteen years of her death, her poetical works remain unmatched. As a prolific poet, she started writing at a very young age. The first volume of her poetry “Khushbu” got great critical acclamation in 1970s. The other volumes of her poetry, “Sad-e-Barg”, “Inkaar”, “Khud Kilami” and “Kaif-e Aaaina” were also equally popular. Besides her poetical works, “Gosha-e-chashm” (compilation of her newspaper columns) was also acclaimed. The work “Mah-e-tamam” forms a compilation of her all poetical works.

Her poetry primarily draws deep influences from Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi. She used to call him “Ammujan” and the first collection “Khushbu” is dedicated to him. Also, the opening poem titled “Sar-e-Shaakh-e-gul” of “Khushbu” is also written on him. Parveen is also the first poetess to use English titles for Urdu poems. Her poems “Ecstasy”, “Prism”, “Catharsis”, and “Duty” have English titles.

Parveen had her own style and diction that remains matchless with any other poet of Pakistan. Ghazal and freestyle are the only two forms of poetry that she used. Her poetical works mainly reflect the themes of love, gender discrimination, social injustice, feminism, social stigmas and romanticism. Apart from being a romanticist, her works reflect the tranquil concepts of love, beauty and contradiction, along with usage of metaphors and embodiments. She was also the first poet to use a term “Larki” in her works.

“Gaye janam ki sada” from her first work “Khushbu”, are a few lines……..

“Woh ek larki………

Ke jis se shayad mein ek pal bhi nahi mili hun………

Mein uskey chehre ko janti hun k uska chehra…………..

There is another poem “Muqaddar” where she writes……..

“Mein wo larki hoon jis ko pehli raat……..

Koi ghoonghat utha key yeh kehdey………”

This unique style of using feminine language is seen rare in the world of a male-dominated Urdu poetry, where a girl is openly talking about something she feels or something that touches her. This gives the most elegant female touch to her work. After Fahmida Riaz, Parveen was obviously the next Urdu poetess to bring out and sketch an influential feminine voice that was both exigent and engaging to a male dominated society. This was the area where she created her own forte. As compared to her ghazals, her freestyle work is more about social matters and taboos like gender inequality, gender unfairness, nationalism, sham, prostitution, human psyche and current affairs.

She is one of those Urdu poets whose works have impressed everyone through her thematic and pragmatic poetry. Her works simply add a new facet to the customary theme of love by presenting it in a simpler yet more transparent style and by using a multiplicity of words and metaphors to express different thoughts with varying intensities. Her works truly define the susceptibility of several generations and reflect an in-separation of poetry and tragedy. The very deep romanticism that radiantly runs in her works shows a subterranean and colossal refinement with an amalgamated melody.

Her poetry has also been sung and composed by many singers and musicians. Tassawar Khanum beautifully sang her poem “Tooti he meri neend magar…..”. Famous band Vital Signs sang her poem “Chehra” in different versions. Tina Sani sang her “Sundar Komal Sapno ki..” Mehdi Hasan sang “Koo ba koo phel gai” from collection “Khushbu” in 1982. Habib Wali sang “Gori karat Singhaar” from her collection “Khushbu”, later which was performed by Jawad Ahmed as well.

Her first book “Khushbu” won Pakistan's Adamjee Award and she was later awarded Pride of Performance. She left us on 26th of December 1994 in a car accident.

I was planning to write on this issue, but the biggest hurdle in my way was the data availability. After talking to several male models and some event managers, I was able to write on Homophobia and abuse that exists in the modeling world. This happens to be a critical and crucial part of the modeling world. In Pakistani fashion industry as well as fashion industry abroad, this culture is found too much. The models and starters who want to begin their career and earn name in the world of modeling often fall prey to gay photographers, artists, stylists and even designers at times. “Homophobia is a hall mark of the fashion industry.” as these are words from a female event manager, who is also responsible for finding fresh talent and new faces. Not being paid on time was also something that she talked about. “Homophobia in showbiz is very normal and rife because the victims hardly report the crimes out of a deep sense of shame. The predators go scot free and are usually ready for others victims because they know they will ever be punished”, she said. Another female model promoter talked about it as well. She is of the view that culprits are never punished, since victims are shy to share their stories and let the world know about them. She also talked about a modeling agency owner who asked her the details about a young boy. Plus the models are also scared. They think that the gay culprits would simply ruin their career and job, so they never bring out the stories. An upcoming model straight went to the promoter and complained to her about the male photographer who was constantly harassing him during a photo shoot. Fashion industry is one of the most challenging and demanding industries and the survival in this industry becomes harder just because of this culture, especially for those who don’t want to be a part of the homo culture.

The victims want to earn a name and want to be well paid as well. But this kind of abuse and harassment simply ruins their self-worth and self-esteem. Another model talked about the kind of politics, monopoly and homo culture. “There is little kind of dirty politics and homo culture in the modeling world,” she said. She also feels that men and women both often find it hard to have a survival in modeling world just because of this issue. An upcoming male model, who has worked for many agencies also, shared in his words how a very well known male designer had offered him to promote him to a high level in fashion industry in Pakistan and abroad only if he fulfills his wrong demands. He also talked about a photographer who tried to harass him during a photo shoot. Later, almost each model talked about a feeling of anger, hatred, fear and shame that they went through. The models also talked about being harassed too.

The problem is that severe gender roles are taught from birth by the family, schools and the media, all of which firmly define and uphold the concept of hegemonic masculinity. Ismat Chughtai wrote on it in her highly and critically acclaimed story “Lihaaf” on which she was persecuted as well. The lady, on which she wrote this homo encounter story, later met her and told her that just because of this story she was able to leave her husband. Homosexual activity is a misdemeanor and prohibited in most Muslim-majority countries. What can be done, what shall be done, and what has to be done is a very big debate. After all its all modeling and fashion world. It’s not even easy to talk about such issues nor find any real solution to it. The law for harassment is up there, but people are scared of making a complaint against any culprit, for a better career. It’s not something non-professional but un-ethical, or may be un-lawful as well.

Sabrosa Purr: Los Angeles New Superstars

Sabrosa Purr is a genre-defying band from Los Angeles, California. The band comprises four members: Will Love is the guitarist, Jeff Mendel is the lead guitarist, Angie Mattson is on bass and Mahsa Zargaran is on drums. Their self-produced début EP was released in and then the follow-up EP was released in 2009. Their full album, produced by Tracy Chisholm, is estimated to be released in fall 2010. The band has performed and toured several places like US and Japan. Some of the beautiful songs by the band include "Fashion kills", "The Lovely People", "Closer" and "One Weak Moment".

Sadaf Fayyaz: What would you say about your education and music training?

Will Love: I took some lessons at home, else I am self-taught.
Jeff Mendel: Same as Will, took a few lessons as a kid, but mostly self-taught.
Mahsa Zargaran: Classically trained in piano since the age of five. Self taught in other instruments with help and tips from my awesome musician friends (i.e. I wouldn't be the drummer I am today without input from Mr. Love).

SF: What would be your inspiration in music?

Will Love: Mine came from tones, textures, ambiance, peanut butter, espresso and John C. Reilly.
Jeff: Definitely inspired by Bill Murray and Ramen
Mahsa Zargaran: I'm inspired by details, rain, Balenciaga, Le Corbusier, Ayn Rand, fog, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Daniel Day Lewis, Rachmaninoff.

SF: Give a brief intro of the band members.

Will Love- Singer/Guitarist, I started the band. I wear tighter pants than are probably fashionable which is probably what inspired our song "Fashion Kills", which is today the #4 most requested song on KROQ's Locals Only Top 5!

Mahsa Zargaran: I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran and had never even heard of The Beatles until a few years ago, so I never thought I would ever be in a band in my life, let alone be the drummer of one of my favorite bands of all time! I saw Sabrosa Purr live at Spaceland in 2008. Fell in love with everything about the band and became an instant fan, and I can't believe that now I get to be the Purr drummer!

SF: What made you guys go for music?

Will Love: My uncle; He was a great musician who played in bars all over Texas. Seemed like a whole helluva lot of fun.
Jeff: My brother gave me a Jimi Hendrix album when I was 12 and it changed my life.
Mahsa Zargaran: I never thought I had the option of pursuing music as something that's more than a hobby until 5 years ago when I moved to Los Angeles and went to recording school thinking it would be fun to learn to record music I write in my spare time someday. I had never met any musicians until then. And that changed my life forever.

SF: What was the first instrument you learnt playing and at what age?

Will Love- Drums at age twelve. I played snare drum in the marching band.
Jeff: I got a guitar when I was thirteen
Mahsa Zargaran: Piano at five.

SF: Tell about your favorite bands and musicians.

Will Love: Radiohead, Prince, Oasis and Eminem
Jeff: Floyd
Mahsa Zargaran: Massive Attack, Portishead, NIN, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Scott Walker, George Michael, Pink Floyd & Sabrosa Purr of course! (I hadn't heard any of these bands until only a few years ago, except for George Michael. Yes, apparently I did grow up under a rock.)

SF: Share a few lines on your upcoming album.

Will Love: well our upcoming album is named "To The Crickets and The Ghosts" that is a triumph over adversity as I imagine most albums by indie bands are. That album is intense because our lives were so intense while writing and recording it. But, there's some beauty in there as well. The overflow of beauty can be found on our EP "Volaras".

SF: Where would you place your music genre?

Will Love: Indie/Alternative/Glam & Shoegaze
Jeff: I'd throw in Rock, too.

SF: Tell something about your cover songs?

Will Love: Yes, so many
Jeff: Yes.
Will Love: Ok, we're being smartasses, you really meant to know what they were. :) I did"Cocaine" by Clapton/JJ Cale and "To Bring You My Love" by PJ Harvey, and "The Cross" by Prince. But, we've yet to record that last one.

SF: How do you learn things?

Will Love: Currently from pain and the internet.
Jeff: I learn from books.
Mahsa Zargaran: Books. And Will Love. The guy is an information junkie. I almost can cancel my internet or any connection with the outside world, maybe even go back to living under a rock and I wouldn't miss a thing that goes on as long as he visits my rock once in a while.

SF: What is music according to you?

Will Love: I suppose music could be defined as "when various sonic elements get along with each other".
Jeff: "sounds that make your brain say 'yummy'"
Mahsa Zargaran: An engagement with others (not necessarily humans)

SF: What message would you like to give the readers?

Will Love: You are more appreciated by these 4 people that most of you have never met than you could possibly imagine.
Jeff: Come to our shows! Naked!
Mahsa Zargaran: I am very excited for you to discover us! There are textures we've been making that I've never heard any other band create.

The design combines a hybrid of modern as well as traditional styles, with a modern scheme and open plans and traditional finishing and detailing style. While talking about the architecture of Serena, the rich use of “Mushrabiyas” (bay windows) throughout the façade and lobby add more splendors to it. The main idea behind is the use of “Sheesham” wood and a revival of old Islamic Civilizations where bay windows were used for fresh air circulation. Apart from depicting a rich Islamic and cultural architectural heritage, the true style is simply reflected in aesthetics of the public areas, rooms, corridors and restaurants, with a deeply rooted sense of art. The manifested work of the artisans deeply encompasses the magical beauty on ceilings, walls, floors and furnishing. The hand-made glaze tiles add more majesty to the interior. Also the hand-carved “Naqashi” could be seen there. The interior has simply artistic creations by Ustad Saiffullah, Michoo Sallah-Ud-Din, Shafique Rana, Master Mahmood and Ustad Allah Rakha.

The interior uses a rich and fine combination of Botticino marble flooring, Sheesham wood, earth-tone on walls and Chakwal sand stone in an ideal blend. Upon reaching the entrance, one sees a sand blasted intricate glass designs that impart the image of a circumspect luxury. The striking use of marble flooring throughout the hotel reflects the mastered and skillful work of Pakistani artisans. The lobby is simply scattered with classy and nostalgic imagination. Especially the fountain at lobby adds more grandeur and charm to it, with water flowing from bowl and Diyas (lights) floating on the surface. Thus, the style creates an ambiance of harmony and serenity. The lobby’s floor is interlaced with symmetrical and geometrical patterns of marble.

Also, apart from the interlaced designs, the unusual use of materials and their replication at certain places add more attractiveness, opulence and glamour to the interior decor. The antique and marvelous Persian rugs add more complexity and beauty to the interior. This reflects a style of perfect proportion and balance, deeply enriched with exquisite craftsmanship and deep hall marks of Islamic architecture. The use of wooden arches that frame colonnades supporting balconies is truly ravishing. Also, the linear and proportional extension of the colonnades, bifurcating spaces and attaching the lobby adds more exquisiteness to the interior. The rich Iranian crystal-made Shamadans (chandeliers) add a highly romantic touch to the lobby lounge. The elegant crystal chandeliers known as Shamadans in Turkmenistan and “Lalae” in Iran are one of the most fabulous décor pieces at Serena.

As ceilings are concerned, they are produced with the same elegance and splendid geometric expression of interlaced wood with floral motifs beautifully brushed in ochre, amber green and Indian red. The main lobby ceiling exemplifies the rich “Naqashi” of Ustad Saif-ur-Rehman. The magnificent transformation of Sheesham into splendid piece of art is commendable achievement. The ceiling of the main lobby has been lined with a plaster and arabescue stucco tiles.

The Zamana Restaurant delightfully blends together Moorish, Kashmiri, Islamic and traditional sways in an assorted fashion. The overall special effort by the designers and architects to essay and safeguard the customary crafts has been an inimitable feature of Serena Islamabad. “The Maghreb” Speciality Restaurant luxuriantly enthralls with an enhancing brilliance and exotics achieved through the beautifully arched ceilings and crystal chandeliers. Talking about the interior of the Banquet Hall, it’s beautifully and richly lavished with features of Moorish and Islamic brilliance. One would find a family note of Islamic finery and gorgeousness with textured plastered walls and hand-painted domed ceilings. However, the doorways from the Hall have been outlined with the lime plaster and stucco respite. Also, the vibrant ceilings of the Banquet Hall are painted by Ustad Saif-ur-Rehman that truly exhibits his genius. Just like the lobby, the hall is also enriched with drapery of colors and intricate furniture.

As coming to the art work, the Serena’s interior exhibits a rich collection of art work by renowned artists like Naheed Raza, Gulgee, Amin Gulgee, Samina Ali Akhtar, Maleeha Ali Agha, Masroor, Kazi, Abrar and Has-saan Gardezi. The “Maisha” health club and pool offer some nice gym facilities, along with some steam room and dry heat saunas too. Talking about the fabrics and carpets, the most revived designs have been used from Swat, Punjab and Kashmir. The rich source of Afghani hand-woven carpets, Kilims, Moroccan and Tunisian traditions encompass a deep heritage. Special care has been taken in the design and selection of fabrics, curtains and carpets to ensure factual manifestation of Islamic Architecture. The architecture at Serena truly reflects the masterpiece beauty and skill of Nayyer Ali Dada. The fabrics and furniture is of Casabella where furniture and wood work has been by Mohkam Furnishers.

“My biggest passion is definitely music and it always strengthens me to deal with all the obstacles in life. It is the main driving force behind whatever I have achieved so far. All About Suicide

"Suicide, Durkheim's third major work, is of great importance because it is his first serious effort to establish an empericism in sociology, an empiricism that would provide a sociological explanation for a phenomenon traditionally regarded as exclusively psychological and individualistic.

Durkheim proposed this definition of suicide: "the term suicide is applied to all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows wil produce this result" (1982, p. 110 [excerpt from Suicide]). Durkheim used this definition to separate true suicides from accidental deaths. He then collected several European nations' suicide rate statistics, which proved to be relatively constant among those nations and among smaller demographics within those nations. Thus, a collective tendency towards suicide was discovered.

Of equal importance to his methodology, Durkheim drew theoretical conclusions on the social causes of suicide. He proposed four types of suicide, based on the degrees of imbalance of two social forces: social integration and moral regulation.

Egoisitic suicide resulted from too little social integration. Those individuals who were not sufficiently bound to social groups (and therefore well-defined values, traditions, norms, and goals) were left with little social support or guidance, and therefore tended to commit suicide on an increased basis. An example Durkheim discovered was that of unmarried people, particularly males, who, with less to bind and connect them to stable social norms and goals, committed suicide at higher rates than unmarried people.

The second type, Altruistic suicide, was a result of too much integration. It occurred at the opposite end of the integration scale as egoistic suicide. Self sacrifice was the defining trait, where individuals were so integrated into social groups that they lost sight of their individuality and became willing to sacrifice themselves to the group's interests, even if that sacrifice was their own life. The most common cases of altruistic suicide occurred among members of the military.

On the second scale, that of moral regulation, lies the other two forms of suicide, the first of which is Anomic suicide, located on the low end. Anomic suicide was of particular interest to Durkheim, for he divided it into four categories: acute and chronic economic anomie, and acute and chronic domestic anomie. Each involved an imbalance of means and needs, where means were unable to fulfill needs.

Each category of anomic suicide can be described briefly as follows:
Acute economic anomie: sporadic decreases in the ability of traditional institutions (such as religion, guilds, pre-industrial social systems, etc.) to regulate and fulfill social needs.
Chronic economic anomie: long term dimunition of social regulation. Durkheim identified this type with the ongoing industrial revolution, which eroded traditional social regulators and often failed to replace them. Industrial goals of wealth and property were insufficient in providing happiness, as was demonstrated by higher suicide rates among the wealthy than among the poor.
Acute domestic anomie: sudden changes on the microsocial level resulted in an inability to adapt and therefore higher suicide rates. Widowhood is a prime example of this type of anomie.
Chronic domestic anomie: referred to the way marriage as an institution regulated the sexual and behavioral means-needs balance among men and women. Marriage provided different regulations for each, however. Bachelors tended to commit suicide at higher rates than married men because of a lack of regulation and established goals and expectations. On the other hand, marriage has traditionally served to overregulate the lives of women by further restricting their already limited opportunities and goals. Unmarried women, therefore, do not experience chronic domestic anomie nearly as often as do unmarried men.

The final type of suicide is Fatalistic suicide, "at the high extreme of the regulation continuum" (1982, p. 113). This type Durkheim only briefly describes, seeing it as a rare phenomena in the real world. Examples include those with overregulated, unrewarding lives such as slaves, childless married women, and young husbands. Durkheim never specifies why this type is generally unimportant in his study."

I even read his theory on suicide and Banu Qudsia Raja Gidh too. But I am still unable to understand it. What I wish to say is that so many suicide bombings and killings in our country, how are these classified? Is a collective suicide or accidental death that takes away so many lives? His terminolgy seperates out suicide from accidental deaths.Are social forces boosting this process? Dont know how to categorize it.Where would you put the story of a girl who being a cancer patient refuses chemotherapy to continue her pregnancy, and dies soon after giving birth to a healthy kid.Where does one put mercy killing or Euthanasia (when doctors kill some patient suffereing from an incurable disease) or the process of "Harakiri" in Japan? What kind does this fall into? Where do honor suicide, forced suicide and Seppuku lie?

He is a classy musician with lot of miscellany. Having played with The Barbarians, Junoon, Vital Signs, Awaz and Karavan now, he really masters different genres of music. He has also worked with renowned artists Sajjad Ali, Ali Haider, Haroon and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. His music journey dates back to two decades ago in 1987 and his experience stretches over twenty years; he has touched almost every genre of music. He doesn’t talk much and seems a deep kind of person. The legendary song “Hum Tum” of Vital Signs portrays deep touch of his tour de force and grandeur. The coke studio sessions are truly ritzy and opulent. “Life is good!!! Everyday above ground is good...not much too complain about...work hard, play hard!”

Tell something about your family and education.

I grew up in Dubai. I am the youngest of three brothers. I went to school in Dubai till 8th grade and then we shifted back to Pakistan where I went onto to complete my O and A levels and got a Bachelors degree in Finance and marketing.

How did you get interested in music and what was the first musical instrument you learned to play?

My mother is an artist so art runs in the family. Both my brothers were big music fans and also owned guitars, so it was only natural for me to pick it up at an early age. It was all natural.

What is your inspiration?

My inspiration was definitely a group from NYC called KISS. Afterwards it would be all the great guitar players I grew up with like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Hendrix and countless others.

Which is your favorite track from “Sara Jahan”?

It is difficult to say since they are all great tracks. The one I love is called “Deewana”.

What is good music according to you?

Good music is anything that takes you away from your everyday life and makes you feel good.

What you expected from "Sara Jahan", has it fulfilled those expectations?

It cannot be answered at the moment.

Why is there a wide gap between your two albums “Sara Jahan” and “Gardish”?

There is because we were all busy doing individual projects. We were all apart and not together at all. Albums are worked on and made when members sit together. I was busy with coke studio as well as touring with Haroon and recording with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

Tell us something about your musical training.

I am a completely self-taught person.

What message does your music reflect? Is it peace, love or any other?

All of the above, also I think it’s good to be positive which is why we did songs like “Aagay hi Aagay” and “Saara Jahan”. It is to move ahead and to be optimistic and affirmative too.

Is it easy these days, to manage with the competition in the music industry?

Yes it is very easy. Our band Karavan has a very loyal fan following.

How often do you jam?

We jam a week before a tour: what we do is that we go over the songs that we might not have played for a while and generally tune into things like harmonies and performance moves. We do some practice for it and we are very well choreographed on stage.

How do you see the future of live music in Pakistan?

I perceive it as very healthy. There are lots of bands coming out now but I only wish if we had better venues to play at like arenas and theatres.

Your motivation and learning comes from?

It comes from my inner self belief and confidence within me to go one step further every time.

How do you take criticism?

Criticism from a music critic is useless for me, however if a fan has something to say the heart speaks. So I go more for critics of an ordinary man and I listen to them very closely. I give a lot of weight age to it.

What are future/long term plans of Karavan?

We take it one day at a time. The fact that we have outlasted every single band out there is a testament to our longevity and the fans’ love for us.

What is easier to play for you: a cover, an instrumental or something new?

It is my own music.

What is one thing that you would like to change about the music industry?

I'd really like to put real people who care about the industry in the right seats. The biggest tragedy is that self serving people are running the show.

When you four work together, and everyone has a different opinion about something, how is that managed?

We manage to take the best out of us. We bounce things off each other and in the end you get Karavan music.

Share a few lines on state of music industry (Pakistan).

Currently it’s healthy but, there are ignorant people running channels and record companies and crooks doing the distribution, it will always be the artist who suffers while they fill their pockets with our CASH.

As a band how would you like to be remembered by people?

I want people to remember us as the best live show they ever saw.

Lastly, what is your message to readers of INK?

Buy Saara Jahan and hear the difference between us and the little boys who imitate us.

Favorite Fashion Designer: I mostly prefer finding vintage items and compiling them myself into an outfit of my own style. However even though I can’t afford most of these designers my favorites in terms of their work would be Zac Posen, Alexander Wang, Thakoon, 3.1 Philip Lim, Alexander McQueen, BCBG Max Azria, Tory Burch. As far as Pakistani designers are concerned, I still have a lot more to learn about what is currently happening in the fashion scene. But from judging what I do know, I love the work of Munib Nawaz, Rizwan Beyg, Nilofer Shahid, and HSY.

However, I do like Gisele Bundchen's confidence and Lakshmi Menon’s style. As far as Pakistani models go,, we have much too many beautiful women here. The list will just be too long.

Shoaib Mansoor was ingenious enough to judge the talent of young boys and asked them to prepare a song. The song was deeply aesthetic and patriotic, thus making new ways to serious pop music in Pakistan. Though Nazia & Zoheb had already initiated a pop music culture, but they were known as siblings, not a band. Nusrat later quit and joined PIA as a pilot, suggesting Salman Ahmed in place of him. The first album was a great and jubilant success, as a result of VS members’ and Shoman’s effort. Two songs from the album “Musafir” and “Yeh Shaam” leave a very nostalgic impression on mind. “Tum Mil Gaye” from first album was shot with Junaid and Andaleeb Iqbal, with other VS members missing from the video. Some songs like “Do Pal”, “Samjhana” and “Yeh Shaam” were used in “Dhundlay Raastay also”.

The video was shot at vicinity of Rawal Lake, produced by Rana Kanwal, a student at Pakistan Television and edited by Dost Muhammad Iqbal. Besides Vital signs, the video also had two other musicians namely Sarosh and Zaheer. The beautiful ghazal was written by Late Parvin Shakir. The song initially composed had different music, from the “Chehra” re-composed, in terms of more bass riffs and healthier rock. The song composed first has a soft and jolly tune attached to it, whereas, the re-composed version has a melancholic and romantic effect. Both are equally invigorating. The concert performance in 1994 had Aamir Zaki in it.

About The other two boys, people have little information about, since they only appeared in “Chehra” and no other song of Vital Signs. These were the times when the song only showed singers’ names. Nusrat afterwards released his own album in 1993 but unfortunately the solo venture didn’t do very well as expected.

The song typically depicted college boys’ attitude, busy writing letters, talking till late nights on the telephone, gazing at every pretty girl. There is a scene where Rizwan is on his bicycle and looking at some girl, without looking ahead, he collides with a man and falls from his bicycle. There is a scene that Rohail gets so absorbed to look at someone that the cold drink he is holding in his hand splashes on earth. Without any model or girl in the video, the direction is remarkable.

Vital Signs......Concert Memoirs

I remember we were posted in New Delhi, my father was counselor (culture) and there were some nice plans about celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of Pakistan. Most of us recommended having a concert at Taj on 13^th of August, 1997. It was a dazzling evening and indeed one of the most memorable evenings of my life. The High Commission staff ordered a big cake of Pakistan’s map for the golden jubilee anniversary. Vital Signs started the evening with their hit songs like “Sanwali Saloni”, “Mera Dil”, “Gorey” and some other famous tracks. The show was nicely hosted by Junaid Jamshed. They were looking really stunning and were all dressed in black. Before the VS show, there was a series of some comical skits and parodies. We were anxiously waiting for Vital Signs’ performance. I remember some ladies muttering to each other, “God, I can’t believe that Pakistani men are so dashing and stunning, I am ready to go to Pakistan today”. The show continued for two hours and VS were requested to sing “Dil Dil Pakistan” in the end. Junaid was a bit reluctant and asked his audience before singing the song. But the Indian audience convinced him and they sang their most super hit patriotic track joyfully.

Some old women in their late 70s started developing a crush for Junaid. He laughed and said,

”Well, I have young girls going mad in my concerts, but this is the first time that I can see some old ladies as well”.

The show was followed by a cake cutting ceremony. The cake was specially designed like Pakistan’s map; the white area had thick white cream dressing and the green portion was topped with green jam. I still remember being the first one to ask for the biggest piece and still dreaming of some more pieces. Upon returning home, I excitedly told my brother about the autographs. He started making fun of me, “You and autographs, I wonder how Vital Signs gave you autographs, you were dressed like a nerd geek, wearing big glasses on even such a multi-colored event.” I had a fierce fight with him, telling him that I wasn’t a celebrity, just a fan of them, so they gave me the autographs. Next day, I anxiously waited for the pictures. Even my Indian friends were a great fan of the band; they kept asking me questions about the show.

Even today, almost after two decades, they have a huge list of fans, listening to their songs and playing covers. They managed to create relishing and mesmerizing music in a highly Islamized era, where there wasn’t any concept of concerts and shows, Vital signs had euphoria and charisma of their own. They were different individuals with their unique set of traits. The band produced only four albums in its eleven years, with very few of the songs going dreadful flops. Towards the end of 90’s, the members started drifting away and shifted their core energies to different fields. They are still legends, but the way they set a fresh trend in a dictatorship epoch, was distinctly appraising. Even today, little is known about the band’s disbanding reasons, but they will always be admired by millions of aficionados all over the world. Even after the disbanding, the VS legends have a whole list of fans. Shahi shifted his energies to music production and mastering, whereas Rohail’s amazing work can be seen at Coke studio. Many bands emerged and disbanded during 1990s, leaving meager information to the fans and world, but people still remember and want to read more and more about Vital Signs, even after twenty three years of band formation.

I attended one concert not of Vital Signs, but of Junaid Jamshed at Services Club Lahore, in 1999. Tickets were selling like hot cakes and we managed to get them only one day prior to the concert. Mom showed keen interest to attend the concert and we both attended it. I initially declined to attend the concert, but agreed afterwards. When the concert started, mom asked me,” I don’t see the dashing guys who came to India with Junaid,” I explained her that the band had disbanded and the members had drifted away.

We got seats in the last rows and were quite unhappy with our sitting plan. The show was organized by Col. Nawazish and some other Army people. When suddenly a junior of my father came to us and asked my mom, ”Bhabi, why you are sitting in the last rows, I guess Sadaf is getting quite bored, let us move to the VIP rows.” Mom declined to go but I agreed to proceed to the front rows. Later the audience created so much ruckus that Junaid asked girls to come forward and sit on the carpet, just in front of the stage. I remember it was pretty cold and there weren’t any proper heating arrangements, but the girls felt glad to sit on the carpet. We even sang some songs like “Us Rah Par”, “Aanknon Ko” and “O Sanama” with him. My father and little dog came to pick us when the show ended at 11 pm. Mom and I were very exhausted but kept discussing the show and other things till late at night.

Since only two of my class fellows attended the show, we had some very narrow-minded and customary teachers in our college, who were informed that we had attended the concert. The grapevine traveled so easily. One of them asked me especially next day, “Did you attend the concert; I wasn’t expecting it from you at least.” I felt a bit appalling, but didn’t say anything to him, since he was unaware of my fanatical likeliness for the band. In fact some brats came from very conservative and traditional families; they kept pointing and telling me that it was quite ghastly to go to concerts and musical shows and kept making stupid points. Even those who weren’t able to get the tickets exhibited the same attitude. It was a typical “Sour grapes” attitude, indeed and I could feel their envy easily. Even some other teachers kept speaking ill about bands and concerts. Those who had attended it merrily reached a conclusion that it was much better to have that day off from the college. At least we could have saved ourselves from nerdy criticism and orthodox remarks, but there wasn’t any way to avoid the nemesis.

Early Works: Vital Signs Rock the World

t is very hard to flashback two decades old memories, but I’ll try my best to portray them. It was an uninteresting and droning evening somewhere around mid of 80’s. My dad was posted in Azad Kashmir and then to Siachen. We were staying at our grandparents place in Baffa. Life was quite slow and boring at the village house, with little creativity and almost no entertainment for young kids. Village folks use to have food around 8 pm and went to sleep around 9 pm. Television transmission programs used to be quite dreary and un-enjoyable for young kids.

One evening, we were watching local television routine transmission. It aired a song with four teenage boys, holding musical instruments and singing in an entirely new style. We kept watching the song called “DIL DIL Pakistan” and didn’t move until the song finished. “WOW, that was amazing”, ejaculated my little 4-year old brother, “I love it’. I had the same notions as well.

They just mentioned the singers’ names. They later came to be known as “Vital Signs”, a top-notch and first official band of Pakistan. They produced some more hits like “Chehra”, “Tum Mil Gaye”, “Gorey”, “Sanwali Saloni”, but “Dil Dil Pakistan” was a skyrocket hit, which brought them under the limelight. National songs aired those days were usually picturized indoor in PTV studios. “Dil Dil Pakistan” set a totally novel trend in the history of Pakistani patriotic songs. It was something stunning for the new generation. We later came to know about all the four enigmatic boys of the band. The two young teenagers Shahzad Hasan and Rohail Hyatt were the pioneers of Vital Signs. They beautifully composed a ghazal “Chehra” by late Parvin Shakir, which I found amazing too. There is a slight difference between the “Chehra” composed first and the later one. The one composed earlier is a bit speedy and fast, with six young men sitting and enjoying at the side of Lotus Lake Islamabad. One can see glimpses of a much peaceful Islamabad and outskirts of much cleaner Rawal Lake very clearly in the video.

When my dad came from Siachen, we insisted on buying a cassette of Vital Signs. “But how are you going to listen to the song? You don’t have a music player.” He replied.

Shahzad Hasan was light-eyed, camera-shy bassist, and an energetic Rohail Hyatt was on the keyboards. They worked really hard on the song and it was rated “The World’s 3^rd most popular song” by BBC World in 2003. It is indeed a highly patriotic song. Later Nusrat Hussain (guitarist) was replaced by Salman Ahmed, a student at medical College. Vital signs kept producing rocking hits like “Aisa Na Ho”, “Rahi”, “Yehi Zameen”, “Hum Tum” and “Aitebar”. Their videos even sketched swinging moods, ranging from ecstasy to extreme angst. “Dil Dil Pakistan” showed patriotism, “Tum Mil Gaye” depicted marital failure and ending relationships. “Wo Kaun Thi” depicted a typical college boy’s flirtatious attitude, with writing love letters, standing outside college gates, and talking to girls on the phone. “Gorey” and “Sanwali Saloni” had cultural roots, shot in Kailash and Thar, respectively. All of these were luminously directed. One thing that I liked about their videos was that females were never exploited. They even used to model in their own videos and almost eighty percent of the videos were shot without any female models. Even then they were big miraculous hits. Videos like “Wo Kaun Thi”, “Yehi Zameen”, “Chehra”, “Do Pal”, “Aise Hum Jiyen”, “Mera Dil”, “Maula”, “Musafir”, “Yaad Karna” and “Dil Dil Pakistan” didn’t have even a single female model.

My younger brother was so inspired that he decided to play the cover for “Dil Dil” on his Parents’ Day in 1989. He asked us to get the same kind of jeans and shirt, that Junaid was wearing in the song and a small guitar as well. For the whole night he kept practicing the song, though he was so young that couldn’t utter words properly.

Developing a youth culture was not a cup of cake in 80’s; it was a time when no one could talk openly about musical shows or concerts. The credit goes to some highly innovative and fresh musical programs like “Music 89”, which introduced/promoted many upcoming singers and bands, including Vital Signs and Jupiters. Late Nazia Hasan along with sibling Zoheb and Uncle Sargam hosted it and another program “Dhanak” as well. It aired songs like “Aha”, “Paisa”, ”Dosti” (Jupiters) and ”Do Pal”, with music of “Do Pal Ka Jeevan” in the background. Songs like “Gorey”, and “Do Pal” were blockbusters and picturized in 90’s, with more vivid directorial efforts. (Shoman) Shoaib Mansoor was the first one to depict the exceptional caliber of the young men, and directed a mini-series “Dhundlay Raastay”, featuring all the four members of Vital Signs, Tabinda Sheikh and Nayyar Kamal. The play was written by legendary Hasina Moeen and directed by Shoman. I felt that it could have been made in a better manner, because it was comparatively meager than other masterpiece works of the two legends. Though it managed to show well how members of Vital Signs worked together towards achieving their objectives. The mini play threw light on the early stardom journey of the four young enthusiastic men, their interests, passions and priorities. My favorite dialogue in the play is, “Are you mad? Kia hum loag tere liye sirf musicians hein?”

The first album was a super hit with songs like “Do Pal” , “Dil Dil Pakistan”, ”Samjhana” ,”Musafir”, “Chehra” and “Yeh Sham”. All these tracks depicted different moods. It is indeed one of the most memorable VS works. It also included an instrumental track “Samina”, which is an amazing piece of work and was used as a soundtrack for “Dhundlay Raastay” too. The second album best tracks are “Mera Dil”, ”Bazaar”, and “Tere Liye”. It also had “Rahi”, “Aisa Na Ho” and “Ajnabi”, “Rahi” was a very romantic and heartrending track, whereas “Aisa Na Ho” was somewhat related with the political situation. “Ajnabi” was a very slow, romantic and gloomy song, with a charming Seema Rizvi in it. In 1993, the band came with a startling program named “Guitar 93”. I remember it used to be my favorite program and next day in school, we used to discuss their songs and hum during the recess. The third album had magnificent tracks like “Aitebar”, “Challa”, “Wo Kaun Thi”, “Yehi Zameen” and “Yarian”. “Yarian” and “Sanwali Saloni” tunes were even copied for Bollywood films in 1990s. The last album “Hum Tum” had tracks like “Jana Jana”, “Guzray Zamane Wali”, “Der Ho Gai”, “Main Chup Raha”, “Unka Khayal” and “Namumkin”. If one analyzes critically, there is a colossal difference between the first and last VS albums: The change is not only noticed in terms of dressing only, but also in compositions as well. From plain college boy-like dressing to heavy jackets and long hair, VS depicted much mature looks, and a Pink Floyd style in their last album.
